WRT Pringles/Frito-Lay, what was stopping FL from launching Stax on their own. i.e. entering into Pringles' market first.

I'm asking because while in hindsight it didn't turn out well for Pringles, it may have been a pre-emptive move, considering Pringles had no competition and that would be a market FL would likely enter.

Would it not be better to act first with (in theory) a well thought out strategy/plan, than have to react quickly if FL entered the market with a Pringles competitor? i.e. defend Pringles and also attack FL in some way?
