As for Apple and AT&T, if I recall correctly, Apple was not in the drivers seat when it came to carriers, and it was only AT&T that was willing to strike a deal and carry a Gen1 phone from a computer company.
My memory may be hazy, but I recall questions about Apple's lack of any data compression and network optimization services - like Blackberry had and that carriers loved. Here's an article about some of the woes from back then.
